Atlas of Mud – December 2010


Written by company member Jennifer Fawcett, Atlas of Mud investigates the destructive effects of global warming. WGT partnered with the following organizations: Backyard Abundance, Iowa River Call, Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation District, Interfaith Power and Light. A portion of the proceeds from Atlas of Mud were donated to Iowa River Call. Find out more.

Burn Before Reading – September 2010


Supported with funds from the Iowa City Public Library, Working Group created an hour-long staged reading of Burn Before Reading as part of the Intellectual Freedom Festival. The play examines censorship as it applies to some on the greatest works of literature published in the last 100 years. 

Odysseus, Iowa - June 2010


Written by Jennifer Fawcett & Sean Christopher Lewis and created by WGT, Odysseus, Iowa was a children’s fantasia.  An original, site specific play performed on a farm in Iowa City, Odysseus, Iowa was attended by well over 200 people in its three performances.

Was the Word - 2010-Present


Was the Word is a monthly spoken word and music event that brings together multi-disciplinary artists to perform in a benefit for local non-profits.  As a result of the series Working Group has raised over $2000 for local non-profits. Find out more.

Anti-Discrimination Videos and Presentation, 2010


WGT produced a series of Spanish and English videos supported by a United States Department of Justice Grant with the UI Center for Human Rights, to inform Iowa's immigrants and employers of their rights and responsibilities. WGT developed a Theatre of the Oppressed training session for the Harvesting Dignity in Midwestern Fields and Factories conference. 

Make Iowa Better, April 2011


Working Group Theatre, supported by the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights, presented Make it Better, Iowa, an evening of storytelling, music, and theatre to raise awareness of the issues facing LGBT youth in Iowa and encourage others to play a role in creating a better Iowa for all citizens. Denali - October 2010


Written by Austin Bunn,  WGT presented a workshop production of Denali at Riverside Theatre in October 2010. The show then had a successful tour to Grand Rapids and Three Oaks, Michigan, and finally to the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, where it was nominated for three Acclaim Awards. 

Under Construction Solo Festival, April 2011


Working Group Theatre brought together six performers for the week long festival that featured two full-length solo shows and four pieces under development.  Supported by an Iowa Arts Council Mini-Grant.

Rust - October 2011-Present

In 2008 General Motors shuttered the 75 year- old stamping plant on 36th street in Wyoming, Michigan. Based on interviews of affected workers, RUST explores what happens to the people who make things…when we stop making things. Featured in the NYTimes magazine. Find out more.

Telling: Iowa City, November 2012

More than three thousand veterans will be returning to Iowa from active duty this year. Telling: Iowa City is a play taken directly from the stories of Iowa City veterans and their families, and performed by the veterans themselves.  Find out more.

Mayberry, April 2012-Present


Imagine a Midwestern community that prides itself on its acceptance of diversity. Then imagine an influx of immigrants from a neighboring metropolis coming to that community, bringing with them new opportunities as well as new challenges.  A story in black and white.

The Toymaker’s War, Feb  2012 -Present

The haunting tale of a journalist who travels to Bosnia to find the perfect story and instead finds a village of children in the midst of a civil war. From the author of Atlas of Mud, directed by Sean Lewis.  Find out more
